This supports other research we have seen which shows average US wages declining by 2-2.5% over the last few years. Some of this is leading to resourcing - returning manufacturing and services to home countries like the United States. However, if everyone is to win then progress must be sustainable and more than increased hours... real productivity - output per hour - must improve. It is not enough to work harder the long distance winners are ALWAYS working smarter. Delete the scoop?

This is a continuation of the remaking of work in the Western world. In 1995 William Bridges wrote JobShift a book that heralded the transition to a "job" less world. Years later Fortune magazine produced a cover story announcing again the end of the job. Not that work would go away, but that for a variety of reasons, the job a the unit of personal security and career would disappear. Much of that has come true - unfortunately the support systems, tax structures to aid that transition have been missing or behind in so many ways. The struggle has been compounded by organizations themselves. Failing to establish ways to think about an interim workforce as something more than "The Expendables" these businesses fail to understand the care and development these professionals need and desire. The benefit to caring well for temps, interims, professionals for hire, etc. can produce great benefits for organizations. Delete the scoop?

The college degree is becoming the new high school diploma: the new minimum requirement, albeit an expensive one, for getting even the lowest-level job.
Consider the 45-person law firm of Busch, Slipakoff & Schuh here in Atlanta, a place that has seen tremendous growth in the college-educated population. Like other employers across the country, the firm hires only people with a bachelor’s degree, even for jobs that do not require college-level skills.
This prerequisite applies to everyone, including the receptionist, paralegals, administrative assistants and file clerks. Even the office “runner” — the in-house courier who, for $10 an hour, ferries documents back and forth between the courthouse and the office — went to a four-year school.
“College graduates are just more career-oriented,” said Adam Slipakoff, the firm’s managing partner. “Going to college means they are making a real commitment to their futures. They’re not just looking for a paycheck.”

Just like inflation, this is simply a response to the growing demand for jobs in the market.
The sad part is that a college degree should not bar equally qualified people for these jobs because those degreed individuals are going to be looking for their next promotion within a few months of the hire. Whereas individuals with less job prospects may decide to hold on to their job longer thus saving companies money in training and hiring staff in addition to fostering a healthier corporate culture.

Brand loyalty is being trumped by customized customer service experiences, according to a new consumer survey by inContact and Harris Interactive. The findings reveal that over half of consumers would switch brands based on customer service options.

This is the perfect moment to mention... If you work on building a brand via marketing without building great service you are acting as an old Hollywood film set... a great facade on the outside, nothing on the inside. Branding is not overblown. It is essential. However, real branding means that your brand stands for something - it represents something bigger than the image. Good branding is in fact creating such value that mere words cannot contain the power in your service. Here's an example When you think of Coca Cola, it is likely you associate memories of good times throughout your life. You see mental images triggered by the name. I remember my Dad buying me a special Coke on a very hot day after very hard work in his vegetable garden. The work was not memorable... until the Coke. The Coke - which was slightly frozen - was a time of recognition. From my Dad to me. To this day, when I reflect on a Coca Cola, I think of that day. A good day with my Dad. People in their sixties should go to university to retrain because they will be expected to work for longer before retirement, the Government has suggested.

Western countries may begin to do more of this... encouraging and supporting the Over 60 population to keep working. There are more reasons for this than highlighted in this article but let's include those as well... 1. By 2033 1 in 4 in the UK will be over 60. That certainly means that the non working 60 pluser will be using more government resource unless they are working. However, it also means 2. Limits on immigration and a declining birth rate means not enough workers to fill jobs available. That means there will be jobs for those with the skills to fill them. 3. Pensions and retirement savings have been drained during the Great Recession. 60 plusers will want the opportunity to make up lost ground. 4. Healthcare improvements will lengthen the number of practical work years available to us all. So, if you are over 50... what university will you be attending? Delete the scoop?

Developing the Social Business... Its becoming apparent to me one of the topics of the year will be developing the Social Business... seeking ways to bring the connectedness of the real world into and a part of the internal business world. The gap has been growing and has now reached a potential "snap back" as some businesses start to seek gap closure. However, that will not last long if the discussion is "about the plumbing" as Paul Colligan suggests in this video. One difference... Paul does not go far enough - a social business is about more than marketing - every process in the organization will need to become a social business if it is truly important that businesses need to be more innovative, collaborative, fast, and connected. Will 'Chinese HR' Hamper US Companies?

A fascinating perspective. One of my trend suggestions a few years ago was an "Asian stall" where Chinese growth stalls due to a lack of the human resources needed to continue growth. Namely management talent. However, what fascinates me is the double hit taking place... a limited number of skilled leaders combined with a predominance of a singular strategic approach... Chinese organizations were more than two-and-a-half times more likely than U.S. ones to say that to a great or very great extent they followed a “low-cost-operator” approach And... the "low cost operator" organizations are the largest organizations What does that imply?...This is where most Chinese managerial talent is developing. For me the question was: Could China develop the broad base of educated and experienced management needed to fullfill talent demand at a sustained growth rate? At some point China would stall. Eventually effective managerial leadership supply would catch up. But then there is the double hit... as a "low cost operators" the broad base of managerial talent may challenge the shift now talking place. Many global organizations are rethinking sourcing and China faces a need to diversify strategic approaches. This will happen. Its only a matter of time. One last thought... as Western organizations rushed to move operations that make and deliver to low cost operators -- what happened to our own managerial skills?
